St. John’s wort or Hypericum perforatum is a mysterious and magical herb with incredible health benefits. It reaches its peak flowering during the summer solstice, and tradition has it that the most auspicious day for harvesting it is St John’s Night, after which it is named.
Its history dates back to ancient times. On the night of the summer solstice, it was customary to prepare a mixture of St John’s wort, lavender, and other aromatic herbs. This mixture was left in a basin of water outside all night to absorb the moon’s influence. The next day, this water was used to wash one’s face in order to drive away negative energies and protect against seasonal ailments.
